Mathematical Formula & Variables
Equation Model
Net Take-Home Pay = Gross Pay - Taxes (Federal + FICA + State) - DeductionsPayroll calculations involve determining gross earnings, and then applying standardized tax rates: Social Security is 6.2%, Medicare is 1.45% (FICA), and federal/state tax rates apply progressively.

Practical Example Calculation
Scenario Context: An hourly employee works 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours at a rate of $25 per hour (with 1.5× overtime multiplier). Their tax rates are: Federal Tax = 10%, FICA (Social Security + Medicare) = 7.65%, and they contribute $50 to health insurance.
Step 1: Calculate Regular Pay = 40 hours × $25 = $1,000.
Step 2: Calculate Overtime Pay = 5 hours × ($25 × 1.5) = 5 hours × $37.50 = $187.50. Total Gross Pay = $1,187.50.
Step 3: Calculate Pre-tax Health Deduction = $50. Taxable Gross Pay = $1,187.50 - $50 = $1,137.50.
Step 4: Calculate Federal Tax (10%) = $113.75.
Step 5: Calculate FICA Tax (7.65% of Gross) = $1,187.50 × 0.0765 = $90.84.
Step 6: Total Deductions = $50 + $113.75 + $90.84 = $254.59.
Step 7: Net Pay = Gross Pay - Total Deductions = $1,187.50 - $254.59 = $932.91.
The employee receives a gross pay of $1,187.50 and takes home a net check of $932.91.
