Practical Example Calculation
Scenario Context: Tiling a bathroom floor measuring 10 feet long by 8 feet wide using standard 12" × 12" tiles, a 1/8" grout joint, and a 10% waste factor.
Step 1: Calculate total room floor area: 10 ft × 8 ft = 80 square feet.
Step 2: Convert tile dimensions with grout: Tile size is 12" + 0.125" = 12.125" by 12.125".
Step 3: Calculate individual tile coverage: (12.125 × 12.125) / 144 = 1.021 square feet per tile.
Step 4: Calculate base tiles needed: 80 sq ft / 1.021 = 78.3 tiles.
Step 5: Apply 10% waste factor: 78.3 × 1.10 = 86.13 tiles.
The bathroom flooring project will require approximately 87 individual tiles.
