Asphalt Required (Tons)6.34 Tonsbased on compacted density
Surface Area500 sq ftdriveway coverage footprint
Cubic Yards Paved3.24 yd³incl. 5% waste buffer
Weight in Pounds12,688 lbsapprox hot mix density

Mathematical Formula & Variables

Equation ModelAsphalt Tons = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Depth (in) / 12) × Density (145 lb/ft³) / 2000 × (1 + Waste % / 100)

The asphalt weight formula solves for total volume in cubic feet, then multiplies by the average compacted density of hot-mix asphalt (145 lbs/ft³). The total weight is then converted to standard US short tons by dividing by 2,000.

Variable Definitions

SymbolDescription
Asphalt TonsTotal weight of asphalt material required in tons
Length (ft)The total length of the paved driveway or road in feet
Width (ft)The total width of the paved driveway or road in feet
Depth (in)Pavement layer thickness in inches (usually 2 inches for top coats)
DensityCompacted asphalt mass per volume, standard is 145 pounds per cubic foot

How to Use the Asphalt Calculator

  • Input the Length and Width of the driveway or parking area in feet.
  • Select the paved Thickness/Depth in inches (2 inches is typical for residential resurfacing).
  • Select your asphalt density preset or use the default 145 lbs/cu ft.
  • Add a waste margin percentage (typically 5-10% to account for edging and compaction variance).
  • Calculate to view the total surface area, wet cubic yards, and the tonnage of HMA to order.

Practical Example Calculation

Scenario Context: Paving a residential driveway measuring 50 feet long, 10 feet wide, to a finished compacted thickness of 2 inches, with a 5% waste buffer.

Step 1: Identify inputs: Length = 50 ft, Width = 10 ft, Depth = 2 inches (which is 2/12 = 0.167 ft).
Step 2: Calculate cubic volume: 50 × 10 × 0.167 = 83.33 cubic feet.
Step 3: Multiply by asphalt compacted density (145 lb/ft³): 83.33 × 145 = 12,083 pounds.
Step 4: Convert to tons: 12,083 / 2,000 = 6.04 tons.
Step 5: Apply 5% safety margin: 6.04 × 1.05 = 6.34 tons.
The driveway paving project requires 6.34 short tons of hot-mix asphalt.
