Mathematical Formula & Variables
Equation Model
Volume (yd³) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Depth (in) / 12) / 27 × (1 + Waste % / 100)Gravel volume is calculated by finding the cubic footage (Length × Width × Depth in feet) and dividing by 27 to find cubic yards. Total weight is calculated by multiplying cubic yards by the density coefficient of gravel (approx. 1.4 tons per cubic yard).
Variable Definitions
| Symbol | Description |
|---|---|
| Volume (yd³) | Total gravel volume required in cubic yards |
| Length (ft) | Overall length of the pathway or bed in feet |
| Width (ft) | Overall width of the pathway or bed in feet |
| Depth (in) | The planned filling thickness or depth of gravel in inches |
| Tons | Total gravel weight in tons (1 ton = 2,000 lbs) |
How to Use the Gravel Calculator
- Input the Length and Width of the pathway, patio, or excavation zone in feet.
- Enter the target Depth of gravel in inches (usually 2-3 inches for landscaping, 4-6 inches for driveways).
- Specify your desired safety waste factor (10% is highly recommended for loose aggregates).
- The calculator will immediately solve for cubic yards, cubic feet, and total weight in both US tons and pounds.
Practical Example Calculation
Scenario Context: Laying a decorative gravel pathway measuring 30 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 3 inches deep, with a 10% safety margin.
Step 1: Identify dimensions: Length = 30 ft, Width = 4 ft, Depth = 3 inches (which is 3/12 = 0.25 feet).
Step 2: Calculate volume in cubic feet: 30 × 4 × 0.25 = 30 cubic feet.
Step 3: Convert to cubic yards: 30 / 27 = 1.11 cubic yards.
Step 4: Apply 10% safety buffer: 1.11 × 1.10 = 1.22 cubic yards.
Step 5: Calculate weight (density of gravel is 1.4 tons per yd³): 1.22 yd³ × 1.4 = 1.71 tons.
The pathway requires 1.22 cubic yards of gravel, which weighs approximately 1.71 tons (3,420 lbs).
