Gold Zakat Fiqh Guidelines

The Nisab for gold is 20 classical Mithqals, precisely 85.0 grams of pure 24K gold. According to the Hanafi school, all gold jewelry is zakatable once Nisab is reached. According to the Majority (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali), customary personal jewelry worn without extravagance is exempt. Diamonds and non-gold gemstones are 100% exempt and must be deducted.

Mathematical Formula & Variables

Equation ModelZakat = Pure 24K Gold Grams (Net) × Gold Spot Price/g × 2.5% [if Pure Grams ≥ 85g Nisab]

The Nisab threshold for gold is fixed by Prophetic Sunnah at 20 Mithqals (Dinars), which equals 85.0 grams of 24-Karat pure gold (or 2.732 troy ounces / 7.288 tolas). Any alloyed karat (22K, 21K, 18K, 14K) must be converted into equivalent pure 24K grams. Weight of non-gold precious stones (diamonds, emeralds, pearls) is deducted from gross weight.

21K and 18K Gold Jewelry Zakat Calculation Example

Scenario Context: A Muslim holds 120 grams of 21-Karat gold bangles with 10 grams of embedded cubic zirconia stones, plus 50 grams of 18-Karat gold rings. The current market spot price of 24K gold is $75 per gram. Calculate the Zakat due under the Hanafi school.

Step 1: Deduct gemstones from 21K bangles: Net weight = 120g - 10g = 110 grams of 21K gold.
Step 2: Convert 21K gold to pure 24K equivalent: 110g × (21 / 24) = 96.25 grams pure gold.
Step 3: Convert 18K gold to pure 24K equivalent: 50g × (18 / 24) = 37.50 grams pure gold.
Step 4: Total Pure 24K Gold Weight = 96.25g + 37.50g = 133.75 grams.
Step 5: Check Nisab: 133.75g exceeds the 85.0g Nisab threshold (Nisab is Met, Zakat is obligatory).
Step 6: Calculate Total Market Value: 133.75g × $75/g = $10,031.25.
Step 7: Compute 2.5% Zakat Due: $10,031.25 × 0.025 = $250.78 (or 3.34 grams of pure gold).
Total Zakat payable is $250.78 (representing 3.34 grams of pure gold) across 133.75 grams of net 24K equivalent gold.
