Brick Masonry Totals
Mathematical Formula & Variables
Bricks Needed = (Wall Area / Brick Facing Area with Joint) × Layers × (1 + Waste % / 100)The brick formula takes the total surface area of the wall (Length × Height) and subtracts openings for doors or windows. It then divides this by the facing area of a single brick, which must include the thickness of the mortar joint (typically 3/8" or 0.375"). Multiply by layers (1 for single-wythe, 2 for double-wythe brick walls).
Variable Definitions
| Symbol | Description |
|---|---|
| Bricks Needed | Total number of standard bricks to purchase |
| Wall Area | Total surface area of the wall (Length × Height) minus openings in square feet |
| Brick Facing Area | (Brick Length + Joint Thickness) × (Brick Height + Joint Thickness) in square inches |
| Layers | Number of vertical courses deep (1 for single wall, 2 for a thick structural wall) |
| Waste % | Allowance for brick cutting and breakage (typically 10% is standard) |
How to Use the Brick Calculator
- Input the overall Length and Height of the brick wall you are building.
- Select your brick size (Standard US, Modular, Roman, or enter a custom dimensions).
- Choose your planned mortar joint thickness (typically 3/8" or 10mm).
- Select wall structure type (Single course/wythe veneer vs double course load-bearing).
- Input the safety margin percentage to compensate for cracked bricks and corner cuts.
- Review the output to see total bricks needed and estimated bags of pre-mixed mortar required.
Practical Example Calculation
Scenario Context: Building a single-wythe garden brick wall that is 20 feet long and 4 feet high using standard US bricks (8" × 2.25") with a 3/8" (0.375") mortar joint and a 10% waste buffer.
