Drywall Project Estimation
Mathematical Formula & Variables
Drywall Sheets = (Total Wall & Ceiling Area) / Sheet Coverage × (1 + Waste % / 100)The drywall estimator calculates the sum of all individual wall surface areas (perimeter × ceiling height) and ceiling area, subtracts doors and windows, and divides by the selected drywall panel size (standard sizes are 4'×8' = 32 sq ft, or 4'×12' = 48 sq ft). It also calculates supporting components like screws, tape, and joint compound.
Variable Definitions
| Symbol | Description |
|---|---|
| Drywall Sheets | Total count of individual drywall panels required |
| Total Area | Net wall surface area plus ceiling area in square feet |
| Sheet Coverage | Area of a single sheet (32 sq ft for 4x8 panels, 48 sq ft for 4x12 panels) |
| Waste % | Allowance for cuts and fitting scrap (typically 10-15%) |
How to Use the Drywall Calculator
- Enter the Room Length, Room Width, and Ceiling Height in feet.
- Check the "Include Ceiling" box if you are drywalling the ceiling as well as the walls.
- Specify the number of doors and windows to subtract their square footage.
- Select your preferred panel sheet size (4x8 feet or 4x12 feet).
- Input your waste factor percentage (10% standard, 15% for rooms with multiple alcoves).
- The solver will display sheet count, joint compound buckets (lbs), joint tape roll feet, and screw counts.
Practical Example Calculation
Scenario Context: Drywalling a bedroom that is 12 feet long, 10 feet wide, with 8-foot high ceilings. The project includes the walls (excluding ceiling) with 1 standard door and 1 window, using 4x8 drywall panels and a 10% waste factor.
